Composition Prescreening
Students interested in the Bachelor of Music in Composition must be invited, after evaluation of prescreening submitted materials, to interview for the Composition program and audition on a primary instrument.​​​​​​ 


Composition Prescreening Requirements - Materials due by January 1
Students must provide three scores which demonstrate composition experience for a variety of vocal and/or instrumental solos, chamber ensembles, or large ensembles. A program note on each piece should be included. This composition interview is an opportunity for each applicant to demonstrate proficient musical understanding and ability; applicants will discuss their composition portfolio with a Composition faculty member.
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Acceptable styles for compositions include:
    • Classical (concert, film, and electronic/electroacoustic)
    • Jazz (fully realized scores, no chord charts)
    • ​Musical Theatre
  • ​​​​Compositions in popular/commercial styles are not acceptable.

Scores may be sent either via email​ to Dr. Jennifer Barker or via "snail mail" (USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc.) to:

Audio/midi files are not necessary but are welcome. These can be provided on a CD-R, DVD-R, or sent via email​. Scores sent by email should be PDFs or Sibelius 6 files.

Materials sent to the Department of Music will not be returned.​​
