Organ Audition Information

Applied Major and Music Education Major 

Note: It is understood that students seeking admission to the performance or music education degree with a major in organ must also complete the Minor in Church Music. Evidence of satisfactory progress in the minor is required for admission to junior standing as an organ major.
Students auditioning should come prepared to play all the following:
  • A prelude and fugue by Bach (One of the "Eight Little" preludes and fugues is acceptable);
  • A chorale prelude or other work from the 17th or 18th century;
  • A work from the 19th or 20th century by any non-German composer.


Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Music in Composition, Music Theory or Music History and Literature 

The audition requirements for these programs are the same as given above. Students in the B.A. program are encouraged, but not required, to complete the Minor in Church Music.


Minors
Students wishing to minor in organ performance or in church music must demonstrate a suitable keyboard proficiency as well as the skills and coordination requisite for organ study. This can be done through either:
  • The performance of two pieces for the organ, or
  • Satisfactory performance of two contrasting pieces for piano - one from the 18th century (Bach
or later) and one form the 19th century

Note: Completion of MUSC 179, Organ Class, constitutes a successful audition for the organ or church music minor.

Merit and Honors Programs
Students wishing to study organ through the Merit or Honors Program must demonstrate a suitable keyboard proficiency as well as the skills and coordination requisite for organ study. This can be done through either:
  • The performance of two short pieces for the organ
  • Satisfactory performance of two contrasting pieces for piano - one from the 18th century (Bach or later) and one from the 19th century
