Strings Overview

The string area in the Department of Music serves those pursuing a music major in violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp and guitar, as well as those non-majors who aspire to continue their string studies through college.  Our ensembles, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Music ensembles, offer our majors, minors and non-majors outstanding opportunities to improve their skills (participation is determined by audition). Private lessons, a curriculum requirement for String Majors and minors, are also available, by audition and when space is available, to non-majors and Honors students.  Students work with a string faculty of nationally and internationally renowned artists, in lesson and ensemble settings.

Student Opportunities

The string area provides a broad and exciting range of opportunities for string players, both aspiring professional musicians and educators, as well as musicians who are non-majors. The UD Symphony Orchestra, a 70-80 member full orchestra, performs 4-6 concerts per year, preparing and presenting major works of the symphonic literature. The UD Chamber Orchestra is an elite smaller ensemble, presenting works for chamber orchestra and serving as the ensemble for UD’s Opera Theatre productions. Ample chamber music opportunities exist, with groups learning masterworks of chamber music (string quartet, piano trio, guitar ensemble, etc.), including weekly coaching with artist faculty. Every two years, as a result of a rigorous audition process, a Graduate String Quartet is appointed to perform and serve as graduate assistants.
