Gamelan Lake of the Silver Bear
Gamelan is the major performing ensemble of Southeast
Asia, analogous to the orchestra in Western culture. However,
the word gamelan refers to the instruments and not to
the musicians in the ensemble. The instruments in Delaware's
Gamelan Lake of the Silver Bear include a construction-type
set of instruments constructed by and under the direction
of Dr. Michael Zinn, director and founder of the ensemble.
The instruments are made of aluminum, copper, bronze and
ceramic, and are styled after traditional Javanese design.
The set of instruments is enhanced by a large, hand-wrought
bronze gong, made over 50 years ago in a small village
outside of Surakarta by Resowiguno, Java's oldest and most
experienced gamelan maker. Currently, two gamelan ensembles
are offered by Dr. Zinn. One, for beginners, is a one-credit
university ensemble and the other is an advanced community-based
ensemble.
