Orchestra Audition Information

String Auditions for the orchestra program at UD will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 from 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. in Puglisi Orchestra Hall in the Roselle Center for the Arts. The audition will consist of two brief solos of your choice – one slow/melodic, one fast/technical – that demonstrate your finest playing ability. Additionally, sight-reading and scales with arpeggios may be required. All returning orchestra members must re-audition each year for seating placement.

The audition will be approximately 10 minutes in length. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your assigned time. Click HERE to reserve an audition slot.

Prepared pieces: Two brief and contrasting solos of your choice—one slow/melodic, one fast/technical—that demonstrates your finest playing ability. Plan on about 10-15 minutes of music total. We may stop you or ask you to skip to another spot.

Sight Reading: Students may be asked to sight read a short orchestral excerpt

Scale requirements: Each candidate may be required to play up to two scales – one major, one minor (Harmonic or Melodic only. No natural minor scales.) – with accompanying arpeggios. Be prepared to demonstrate different bow techniques at varying speeds, including spiccato and legato playing.

Violin, Viola, Cello:
Scales & Arpeggios – Prepare all major and minor (Harmonic or Melodic) scales, three octaves.

Scales & Arpeggios – Prepare all major and minor (Harmonic or Melodic) two octave scales.
