Audition Requirements

PIANO

Music Education Major

  • A Bach Invention or Prelude and Fugue from the WTC, or a Suite
  • A Mendelssohn Song Without Words, or equivalent
  • Fluency in sight-reading a melody and simple accompaniment
Piano majors auditioning for the Choral/General Music Education Degree Program:

Prepare a vocal piece to sing for the vocal faculty on the day of your audition. This may be anything that you are comfortable singing. An audition time and music education interview will be scheduled along with the piano audition and the musicality testing.

Piano majors auditioning for the Instrumental Music Education Degree Program:

Prepare a solo or etude on a wind, string, or percussion instrument to perform for the instrumental faculty on the audition day. An audition time will be scheduled along with your piano audition and musicality testing.

Applied Major

  • Bach: Two Inventions, a Prelude and Fugue from the WTC, or a Suite
  • A Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven. One movement is acceptable.
  • A major Romantic or 20th Century work
  • Fluent sight reading
  • All major and harmonic minor scales, four octaves, both hands
All pieces are to be performed from memory for the audition.

Bachelor of Arts, Minor, Merit and Honors

  • Perform two contrasting works from the classical repertory.

Music Theory/Composition, Minor, Merit, and Honors

Same as Bachelor of Arts.
