Ensemble and solo performance opportunities are open to all regardless of major.
Ensembles which satisfy the large ensemble requirement for those enrolled in private study are: Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Chorale, Choral Union, and University Singers.

Instrumental Ensembles
MUSC 113-010 (1) MARCHING BAND, Heidi I. Sarver, director
MWF: 4-6 PM, late August - December
The 300-member University of Delaware Marching Band is known throughout the northeast as a performance ensemble with an innovative approach to entertainment and an emphasis on musicality. It is open to all students from all majors at the University. The UDMB performs for over 20,000 fans at all home football games, travels to select away games, and performs in exhibition at numerous high school marching band festivals. Marching Band instrumentation is comprised of traditional brass, woodwind and percussion (both battery and front ensemble). The UDMB also has a complete auxiliary ensemble made up of colorguard and twirlers. Auditions are required for students interested in these two areas. These auditions are held each May. Percussion is auditioned the first day of Band Camp and assignments are made at that time. Brass and Woodwinds undergo a marching evaluation and musical hearing the first day of band camp. Band Camp is held on campus the week prior to the start of fall semester classes and is required for all members. The Wind Ensemble is a select group of 46 wind and percussion instrumentalists. Membership in the Wind Ensemble is open to students from all majors at the University, and about half of the members are music majors. The Wind Ensemble performs music originally written for wind band and transcriptions from all style periods. Concerts are presented on campus and throughout the state. The Wind Ensemble toured Luxembourg and France in 1990 and was invited to perform at the 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001 Eastern Division meetings of the Music Educators National Conference. MUSC 117-010 (1) UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE ORCHESTRA
M, W: 7-9 PM
The University Orchestra plays a least four public programs a year drawn from the masterworks of music in all styles and periods from Baroque to Contemporary. Feculty and professional soloists and conductors are featured and well as collaborations with other University ensembles. Admission is by auditon only.

Symphonic Band is a group of 60-70 wind and percussion instrumentalists. Membership is open to all students from all majors at the University. The Symphonic Band performs standard concert band literature as well as transcriptions and music originally written for wind band. Concerts are presented on campus. Both Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II explore music written in the big band idiom. Each group contains 16 to 19 members playing one-on-a-part jazz music. The focus is on playing a wide range of styles well. The University's jazz groups are in frequent demand for performances on campus, in schools and at jazz festivals. Each year a well-known guest artist appears in clinic and concert performances with the jazz ensembles. Past guests include Arturo Sandoval, Harry Connick, Jr., Denis DiBlasio, Phil Woods, and Dizzy Gillespie. The University's Jazz Chamber group is a small jazz combo performing various styles of jazz literature, including standards, original compositions and arrangements. MUSC 118-010 (1) PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE, Harvey Price, director

The UD percussion ensemble performs the standard as well as the newlycomposed percussion ensemble literature. Composed of between 8 and 14 university percussion students, the ensemble performs both on and offcampus each year. In Spring 2000, the ensemble was invited to do a concert tour of Israel, where they performed the Israeli premier of George Anthiel's Ballet Mechanique. The UD marimba ensemble is composed of three quartets of percussion students and performs transcriptions, popular music, and newly composed compositions. In addition to on-campus performances, the marimba ensemble has performed in Israel, the West Point Marimba Festival, the Pennsylvania Day of Percussion, and the Settlement Music School Percussion Festival.
MUSC167-010 (1) PEP BAND, James P. Ancona, director
The Basketball Pep Band performs at all men and women's home basketball games. The Pep Band performs a variety of pop, rock and jazz selections. The ensemble meets mid-way through fall semester and ends mid-way through spring semester. Attendance at select games during Winter Session is mandatory. Students register for Pep Band during spring semester.
MUSC 167-010 (1) STEEL DRUM, Harvey Price, director

Delaware Steel is not restricted to music students and enjoys participation from across the University student body. Dedicated to learning the traditional steel drum music of Trinidad, the group also performs classical, and popular transcriptions. Delaware Steel performs several times each year on and off campus.
Vocal Ensembles
MUSC 109-010 (1) SCHOLA CANTORUM, Paul D. Head, director

The University of Delaware Schola Cantorum is actually three separate choirs. Schola Cantorum is a large auditioned ensemble open to students and to members of the community and is dedicated to performing extended works with orchestra. The group rehearses on Monday evenings at 7 p.m.
MUSC 110-010 (1) THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE CHORALE, Paul Head, director

The University of Delaware Chorale, the most select choir at the University, has a long and distinguished history. Members are chosen by audition from all colleges at the University. The choir has varied in size from 17 to 60 and has performed with distinction throughout the east coast of the United States and in Europe as well. The UD Chorale sang with "absolute mastery" said the critics in Finland during their 1988 concert tour. This choir has won second place in Llangolen competitions and has performed at the White House during the presidencies of both Ronald Reagan and George Bush. The UD Chorale undertook a successful concert tour of Czechoslovakia in the spring of 1992, and most recently, a tour of Europe in the summer of 2003. Auditions are held the day before classes start.

University Singers provides women from all colleges in the University with an opportunity to perform in a choral ensemble which presents several concerts each year. Choral literature from a variety of style periods is featured, and a special effort is made to sing music of women composers. Auditions are held the day before classes start.

The art of solo vocal performance is the focus of Opera Workshop, where singers are challenged to create complete opera roles. Members of the Workshop receive individual coaching in both vocal and dramatic techniques. Each year, the Workshop produces a program of operas for performances on and off campus. Recent productions include The Mariage of Figaro, The Music Shop and Susannah. The opera program at the University of Delaware provides an environment that nurtures the development of the singer who aspires to a performing career.
MUSC 125-011 (1) THE CONSORT OF VOYCES (Vocal Ensemble), Russell E. Murray, director

The Early Music program at Delaware provides instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to study and perform music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. The Collegium Musicum comprises a number of chamber ensembles formed around the interests and abilities of its members, providing the opportunity to learn new instruments and performance styles, and to perform in formal and informal settings. La petite bande de la demoiselle de Nemours is the select instrumental ensemble of the Collegium and presents at least one major performance each semester in conjunction with The Consort of Voyces, concentrating on a particular style, historic period, or geographic region. The Consort of Voyces is a primarily a cappella vocal ensemble. Members may also perform individually with instrumental ensembles.
