Early Childhood Music

Fall semester begins the week of September 19, 2009.
Spring semester begins the week of February 13, 2010.

Sibling Policy

In order to control class size, siblings are welcome to attend their brother or sister's classes if they are registered. Siblings may register for their brother's or sister's class for a flat fee of $60 per semester. Parents can make the decision as to whether they will order one or two sets of materials. (Applies to Music for Babies and Toddlers, Little Music Makers, and Music for Young Minds)

Music for Babies

For children ages birth to 18 months with an adult.

Day/Time: Saturday 9:15-10:00 a.m.
Instructor: Kristen LaPortebr/> Tuition: $168 for 12 weeks
Materials: $35

Music for Babies brings the joy of music and movement to the lives of very young children and their parents or other caregivers. Weekly classes consisting of singing and other vocal activities, movement, listening and simple instrument playing create an environment in which the child's musical instincts are nurtured and rudimentary musical skills are developed. Materials include a CD and an instrument.

Music for Toddlers

For children ages 18 months to 3 years with an adult.

Day/Time: Saturday, 10:15-11:00 a.m.
Instructor: Kathryn Makos and Angela Gan
Tuition: $168 for 12 weeks
Materials: $35

Little Music Makers

For children ages 3 to 4 1/2 years and an adult

Day/Time: Saturday, 10:15-11:00 a.m.
Instructor: Karen Hauge and Ashley Martelli
Tuition: $168 for 12 weeks

Little Music Makers focuses on the musical development of young children within a child-centered environment. Through informal instruction, this class will guide the development of musical understanding by providing a rich musical environment, including singing, rhythmic chanting, playing instruments, and stylistic movement. Each child will be guided in a developmentally appropriate manner to establish a musical foundation in preparation for formal music learning. Materials include a CD and an instrument.

Music for Young Minds

For children ages 4 1/2 to 6.

Day/Time: Wednesday, 5:00-5:45 p.m.
Instructor: Kathryn Makos
Tuition: $168 for 12 weeks
Materials: $35

This class will continue a child's musical development by bridging the gap between informal and formal guidance. It will provide instruction on beat competency in both duple and triple meter through the use of rhythmic poems and instruments. It will encourage free movement through creative movement activities as well as work on the development of listening skills and audiation. Children will learn to develop and expand their singing voice through multicultural folk music. They will be given both individualized and class instruction while learning musical skills and most importantly, having fun. Materials include a CD and an age appropriate instrument.

Music Moves: Beginning Class Piano I

For children ages 6 to 8 (1st to 3rd grade).

Sibling discount does not apply.
Day/Time: Thursday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Instructor: Rebekka Cleland
Tuition: $180 for 12 weeks
Materials: $45

Music Moves for beginning pianists will focus on developing the entire musician, including the student's ability to sing, to move gracefully, to audiate musical substance with understanding, and to make a physical connection to music. The development of musicianship skills will be in conjunction with a systematic presentation of developing piano skills, such as keyboard knowledge, technique and body awareness, and notation using traditional folk literature.

Music Moves: Beginning Class Piano II

For children ages 6 to 8 (1st to 3rd grade).

Instructor: Rebekka Cleland
Tuition: $180 for 12 weeks
Materials: $45

This is a continuation of Music Moves: Beginning Class Piano I. You must take Music Moves I in the previous semester in order to register for this class.

Parent Welcome Meeting: September 12, 2009 at 10am in Room 219. Parents only.

Family Week: Ask your family and friends to join you at music class. Siblings, extended family, and friends can join in the fun the week for November 7-13.
