Gaetano Donizetti's L’Elisir d’Amore

This Performance is SOLD OUT

L’Elisir d’Amore’s plot revolves around the rivalry between Nemorino, a simple peasant, and the soldier Belcore for the heart of wealthy and beautiful Adina. When Adina scoffs at Nemorino’s declaration of love and instead accepts Belcore’s offer of marriage, Nemorino turns to the charlatan Dulcamara for a magic love elixir, and all manner of comic misunderstandings ensue.

Bartlett Sher’s new production blends the best of nineteenth-century Italian comic opera with an exploration of the boundaries that lie between artifice, reality and the power of suggestion. Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani star as the fickle Adina and her besotted Nemorino. Mariusz Kwiecien is the blustery sergeant Belcore; Ambrogio Maestri and Erwin Schrott share the role of Dulcamara, the loveable quack and dispenser of the elixir.

Maurizio Benini conducts.
