...And We Were Heard is a nation-wide project promoting works by underrepresented composers. The organization pairs composers with bands and orchestra around the country to create collaborative recording sessions. This fall, the project took on another dimension as social distancing requirements inspired composers to create flexible instrumentation of their work.
Members of the UD Wind Ensemble recording two pieces: Postcard from Sequoia, for flex band, by Nicole Piunno, and Metaphysical Travels, for flex band and electronic track, by Jennifer E. Rose.
Both pieces are written for younger musicians, middle or high school level, which enabled the UD musicians to prepare them in addition to their regular repertoire. UD Director of Concert Bands Lauren Reynolds was happy to take on the recordings as a service project and as example of how music-making can adapt. "It can be done - to make music together even at these times," she says.
