Vocal Audition Information

Prospective voice students must submit a prescreening video though SlideRoom ​(Common Application "Arts Supplement") by January 15th. Priority deadline is January 1st.

If necessary, these students will then be invited to audition on campus. Students who do not submit a prescreening video will not be considered for the music major. 


All Majors, Minors, Merit and Honors

All vocal students will be expected to perform two stylistically contrasting vocal solos from standard classical repertoire, from memory and with accompaniment.

Examples of standard classical repertoire:

  • 17th and 18th century Italian songs
  • Lieder (Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, etc.)
  • French melodies (Faure, Chausson, etc.)
  • Early or contemporary songs in English​

The student should bring the piano accompaniment music with them to the audition. All students must perform with the accompanist provided by the Department of Music.

Vocal majors auditioning for Music Education Choral/General Degree Program will also complete an interview with the Music Education faculty on the day of their audition.


Prospective graduate students should prepare an audition to include the following requirements:

  • An aria from an opera or oratorio
  • A French melodie
  • A German lied
  • A post-1925 English art song
  • A selection of the singer's choice

An Italian selection should be fulfilled by the aria or the fifth option.
