Biography
Steven W. Breffitt works with the Department of Music as a
student teacher supervisor. Mr. Breffitt has served as a cooperating
teacher for more than 20 student teachers from University of Delaware,
and his program served annually as a host for the MUED 379 Teaching
Methods class.
Mr. Breffitt is a graduate of Millersville
University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a
music concentration. He continued to study percussion at UD, where he
also completed requirements for K-12 music and K-12 principal
certification and earned a Master of Education in Educational
Leadership. He spent 35 years in Delaware’s Colonial School District as a
middle-school band director, summer-school administrator and
fifth-grade teacher. In 1985, Mr. Breffitt was selected as the Colonial
School District Teacher of the Year.
In addition to directing
the Gunning Bedford Middle School band program, which included almost
250 students, Mr. Breffitt served as department chairman, a member of
the Building Achievement Team and as a mentor to many teachers of a
variety of subjects, including music. While in the Colonial School
District, Mr. Breffitt served on the District Achievement Team, and
created and/or coordinated various district music activities, including
the District Band Festival, Band Day, curriculum development, a variety
of in-service activities and numerous instrument bids and purchases.
Many of Mr. Breffitt’s students have earned All-State honors, and
numerous Gunning Bedford Band members have gone on to major in music and
become band directors, including his replacement at the school. Mr.
Breffitt has been active in the Delaware Music Educators Association as
All-State Junior Band chairman, All-State Senior Band chairman and as a
presenter at the State Music Day. Since retiring from the Colonial
School District in 2006, he has spent several years as a private school
band director and served as a guest clinician for numerous school
bands/directors as well as an adjudicator for various festivals.
In
addition to teaching music and performing, Mr. Breffitt has coached
more than 30 season of various sports, including football at William
Penn High School in New Castle, Del., and he has been a competitive
swimming official for more than 20 years for the High School Federation,
NCAA, USA Swimming, the YMCA and various recreational swim leagues in
New Castle County.
