Biography
Steven W. Breffitt has worked with the UD School of Music since 2007 in various roles - mostly as a Field Instructor for Student Teachers. Mr. Breffitt is a former employee of the Colonial School District, where he was Director of the Gunning Bedford Middle School Band program of approximately 250 students. While at Gunning Bedford, Mr. Breffitt served for more than 20 years as a Clinical Educator for UD student teachers, and his band program annually hosted the UD MUED 379 Teaching Methods class.
Mr. Breffitt’s additional responsibilities at Gunning Bedford included Department Chairperson, Achievement Team Member, and as a mentor to many teachers. He created / coordinated various district music activities, including: the District Band Festival, Band Day, curriculum development, workshops, and instrument bids / purchases. He has been active in the Delaware Music Educators Association as All-State Junior Band Chair, All-State Senior Band Chair and as a Clinician at the State Music Day. Since retiring from the Colonial School District, Mr. Breffitt has been a private school band director, festival adjudicator, guest conductor, performing musician, and clinician for numerous district / school / band workshops.
A graduate of Millersville University with a B.S. in Elementary Education / Music Concentration, Mr. Breffitt continued to study percussion at UD, completed requirements for K-12 music, and earned a Master’s in Educational Leadership. He spent 35 years in Delaware’s Colonial School District as a Middle School Band Director, a Summer School Administrator at Wm. Penn HS, and a fifth-grade teacher. In 1985, Mr. Breffitt was named Colonial School District Teacher of the Year.
In addition to teaching music and performing, Mr. Breffitt coached more than 30 seasons of various sports, including high school football, and has been a competitive swimming official for more than 20 years for High Schools, the NCAA, USA Swimming, YMCA, and various recreational swim leagues.​
