​David Herman is Trustees Distinguished Professor Emreritus of Music and university organist at the University of Delaware and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory, church music and organ. A native of Pennsylvania, he earned degrees from Wittenberg University, the University of Michigan and the University of Kansas. In 2006 he was awarded an Established Artist Fellowship by the Delaware Arts Council, which he used to study and record music by Hugo Distler and Jan Bender. In 2007, Nashotah House, an Episcopal seminary, awarded him the degree Doctor of Music, honoris causa, for his contributions to the field of church music.

Dr. Herman is the author of The Life and Work of Jan Bender and numerous articles for professional journals. His compositions and editions have appeared in the catalogues of five American publishers. He has served on the faculties of four of the annual Pipe Organ Encounters sponsored by the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and made a presentation at the AGO Region III convention in Washington titled Recruiting and Teaching the New Organist. He presented The Organ Works of Samuel Wesley at the 2004 AGO national convention in Los Angeles.

Dr. Herman has been active as a church musician for nearly 50 years. He is also a recitalist, having performed in the United States and abroad: throughout Germany, in Dublin and Scotland. He has performed in London at St. Michael’s Cornhill, St. Lawrence Jewry and the Temple Church, at the Oxford Town Hall and in eleven English and Welsh cathedrals including Canterbury, London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. His recording of organ works by Samuel Wesley at Coventry Cathedral was released in 2003 on the Redcliffe (UK) label and his recording on the UD organ, Great Mixture! was released in 2006. A new recording of choral and organ works by Jan Bender and Hugo Distler is awaiting publication.

Dr. Herman and his wife, Lauri, have two daughters and three grandchildren.
