Biography
As director of choral studies at the University of Delaware, Paul
D. Head directs the internationally renowned University of Delaware
Chorale, the community-based Schola Cantorum and the UD Symphonic
Chorus, which performs frequently with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Head is a native Californian where he taught in the public schools
for eight years before completing his Master of Music in Conducting and
Music Education at Westminster Choir College of Rider University and a
Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from the University of Oklahoma.
His choirs have toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada,
Asia and Europe and have received consistently high acclaim for their
musical artistry. Under his direction, the UD Chorale has taken first-
and second-place honors at competitive choral festivals in Estonia,
Spain and Hungary.
Dr. Head maintains an active presence as
conductor and guest clinician, having conducted All-State choirs in 18
states in addition to professional presentations and workshops
throughout the United States. His choirs have made frequent appearances
on American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) national (2005, 2013)
and regional (2002, 2008, 2010) conventions. As an active researcher and
pedagogue, he is published in several books and publications, is the
co-editor of Case Studies in Music Education (GiA; 2005) and a contributing author in The School Choral Program (GIA; 2008). He is also the co-editor of the middle school choral volume of Teaching Music Through Performance (GIA;
2011), as well as the conductor for the accompanying CDs, recorded by
members of the UD Chorale, and he is the co-editor of the Handbook for Choral Music Education,
a compendium currently in the works for publication next year by Oxford
University Press. Currently, Dr. Head is on sabbatical in France
writing a book on the pedagogy of rehearsal as related to score
preparation.
In 2014, Dr. Head launched the University of Delaware Choral Academy Summer Symposium, in Provence, France. The Summer Symposium is a unique program for students (from the University
of Delaware and elsewhere) and young professionals who are looking for a
musically challenging and life-affirming experienc.e
As
an active member of the ACDA, Dr. Head has held various leadership
positions at state, regional and national levels. He also holds
membership in Phi Mu Alpha, and Pi Kappa Lambda (the National Music
Honor Society). He currently resides in southeastern Pennsylvania with
his wife of 25 years, and he is the father of three grown children.
