Welcome to the Music Department at the University of Delaware. Whether you are looking for a place to study music, a home for your musical passion while you pursue other studies, or are just looking to hear spectacular music, you’ve come to the right place.
The students and the faculty who make up the Music Department at UD are among the best in the nation, and your opportunities here are nearly endless. Nestled between the cultural hubs of Baltimore and Washington, DC to the south and Philadelphia and New York to the north, we have access to some of the finest performers and ensembles in the world; and as part of a major research university, we do our work in the midst of exciting new ideas and discoveries. And yet, as a student you will have close interaction with your teachers, in small classes that emphasize individual learning. Our faculty are performers and scholars of the highest order, and at the same time, they are intensely engaged in the art of teaching. The department is at the forefront of new evidence-based pedagogy.
A music degree from UD is a launching pad for success. We offer undergraduate degrees in performance, music education, music management, composition, theory, and music history. As a graduate student, you can specialize in performance, teaching, composing or conducting. Our graduates can be found on stages around the world, teaching at major universities, leading some of the nation’s best school music programs, composing in for film, stage, and video games, and working in some of the nation’s most prestigious arts organization.
Your learning will extend beyond the classroom walls. As the home to the first study abroad program in the United States, University of Delaware offers numerous opportunities to experience the world. Our ensembles perform around the world too, in places such as China, France, Colombia, Spain, Israel, Greece, Taiwan and Germany, and you may have the opportunity to make this sort of experience a part of your college experience. Closer to home, our students are active in the community, bringing music to places outside the concert hall.
All in all, the Music Department at the University of Delaware is a special place. I hope you will come and visit us so you can experience it first-hand. Our faculty and our students are ready to welcome you as a new Blue Hen.
