During a concert, audiences witness the result of hours, even years, of preparation. This week, the UD community is invited to experience how that preparation happens during master classes with world-class classical musicians.
“Watching a master class gives you a renewed appreciation for the music and the process,” said Calidore violinist Ryan Meehan. “Audiences can see the artists’ mindset as they delve deeply into the music and the composition.”
The masterclasses are part of the Calidore String Quartet Seminar, now in its second year at UD. The seminar offers participants the opportunity for direct study with members of Calidore as well as violin pedagogue Almita Vamas and David Finckel, co-artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Seminar fellows include Trellis String Quartet, current graduate ensemble-in-residence in the School of Music, along with five additional quartets and five solo violinists.
According to Meehan, fellows benefit from the time on stage in one of UD’s wonderful performance facilities.
“They are all pursuing performance careers, and the more time a musician has on stage the more comfortable they feel," Meehan said.
