Biography
Nathaniel Mitchell, adjunct assistant professor of music theory, specializes in 18th-century opera and American popular music. Situated at the intersection of music theory, musicology, and cognitive science, his research queries how musical knowledge is acquired, organized, and put to creative work. His dissertation on musical form in 18th-century opera received the William F. Holmes / Frank D'Accone Dissertation Fellowship in Opera Studies from the American Musicological Society, and his research on the subject has appeared in Music Theory Spectrum. He has presented conference talks at annual meetings of the Society for Music Theory, the American Musicological Society, the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music, and the American Handel Society, as well as numerous regional conferences. He also moderates the music theory community on reddit.com, an article about which is forthcoming in the Oxford Handbook of Public Music Theory.
