About Jazz Ensemble

UD Jazz Ensemble Group

Capturing the energy and excitement of big band jazz, the University of Delaware's Jazz Ensemble explores a wide variety of music, past and present. The focus is on playing a broad range of styles written in the big band idiom. Jazz Ensemble, directed by Tom Palmer, performs concerts on campus and is in frequent demand for performances at off campus venues, regional schools, and jazz festivals.

Each year a well-known guest artist appears in clinic and concert performances with the jazz ensembles. Previous guests include Arturo Sandoval, Larry McKenna, Phil Woods, John Fedchock, Jeff Coffin, Dizzy Gillespie, Roger Ingram, Ingrid Jensen, Steve Wilson, Kenny Werner, the Brazilian group, Minas, Michael Dease, Sean Jones, and Maria Schneider.​

Tom Palmer

Tom Palmer

​Tom Palmer ​is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Delaware where he heads the jazz studies program. He directs Jazz Ensembles I & II, the Jazz Chamber Ensembles and teaches applied lessons on drum set and jazz piano. Tom has performed with many jazz artists including Ernie Watts, Robin Eubanks, Herb Ellis, Donald Byrd, Wayne Bergeron, Roger Ingram, and Allen Vizzutti. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center, the Grand Opera House in Wilmington and in various area jazz festivals including The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, Rehoboth Beach Autumn Jazz Festival and the True Blue Jazz Festival. His recording credits include Don Glanden's CD Only Believe featuring Ernie Watts; Shawn Quaissanee; Craig Thomas; The Whitney Project; and with his wife, jazz singer Ellen Lebowitz's CDs Invitation to Yesterdays and Smokin' Aloud. Tom is a past president of the IAJE Delaware Chapter, a member of JEN and a frequent clinician. He stays busy composing and arranging, as well as performing on drum set and piano with many of the area's jazz groups.​
