Audition Request Form
Within 24-48 hours of submitting the Common or Coalition application, applicants will receive a confirmation email with information on how to access their My Blue Hen Home application status portal and the audition request form. The request form will allow you to indicate how you plan to complete your audition, in-person on a scheduled date during Audition Days, or pre-recorded video submission. Pre-recorded video submissions no later than January 15.
Repertoire
Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for your instrument, voice, or composition area under the audition repertoire page. If you have any questions or concerns about the requirements, please email the School of Music (musicadmissions@udel.edu), or faculty member in your studio area.
Early Action
Applying to UD's School of Music is a two-fold process: first, admissions reviews your general application materials, and then the School of Music reviews your music-specific application materials, including the audition. EA students will receive notification of their general admissions status by January 31. However, a final decision about your specific major may not be released until February after all auditions have taken place.
Music Theory Placement Exam
All prospective music majors should complete a music theory placement exam (MTPE) around the time of their audition. Applicants typically take the MTPE during audition week at the end of January; early action students may be contacted individually. The MTPE provides an opportunity for prospective majors to meet a member of the music theory faculty and to learn more about academic courses in music theory at the University of Delaware. The MTPE also provides the theory faculty with information about the incoming class that is used when designing the first-year theory courses. Finally, the MTPE enables theory faculty to encourage students regarding their readiness for theory coursework and to suggest areas for practice prior to arriving. In short, we hope you find the MTPE to be a welcoming experience that sets you up for success in the innovative, student-centered music theory courses at UD.
During the MTPE, students will be asked to sing short patterns, melodies, and rhythms. No background in music theory is required or expected, and the entire appointment usually takes less than five minutes.
Interviews
Music Education applicants: All music education applicants will be required to interview with the Music Education faculty as part of their audition.
Applicants who submit a pre-recorded video audition can expect to have a chance to meet with studio faculty. Interviews will take place via Zoom based on the faculty panel's availability. Interviews are brief and intended as a mutually valuable two-way conversation. We have the chance to learn about each applicant and their goals, but also as a place for students to ask questions and to learn more about the music major experience.
Transfer Applicants
Transfer applicants, or those transitioning from the Associates in Arts program may apply to the School of Music and submit a request to audition to attend the in-person auditions in January. Applicants also have the option to submit a pre-recorded video audition via the audition request form.
Applicants who wish to transfer general education credit may access the transfer credit matrix via the Transfer Admissions page. Music course work will require a separate transfer credit evaluation. If applicable, please send unofficial transcripts for music coursework and course syllabi for music courses to facilitate the transfer credit process to musicadmissions@udel.edu as early as possible to allow time for review and planning.
Non-Majors
Students interested in music as a non-major music should visit information for non-majors.
Music Merit Scholarship
Applications submitted by January 15 will be automatically considered for a music merit award after the completed audition.
