Are music scholarships available?
All applicants who audition on the published audition dates are automatically considered for music scholarship; no additional application is required, although it is advised that students submit their FAFSA to receive awards based on demonstrated financial need. Please visit Student Financial Services for more information regarding financial aid and University funding opportunities. All prospective students who audition on any of these dates are automatically considered for music scholarship awards.
Does acceptance into the School of Music guarantee acceptance to the University of Delaware?
Acceptance to the School of Music does not guarantee acceptance to the University of Delaware, or vice versa. You must be accepted to BOTH the University of Delaware Undergraduate Admissions AND the School of Music in order to enroll as a Music Major.
When will I receive my Admissions' decision?
Although Admissions notifies applicants with an admission decision within 8-12 weeks of submitting a completed application, those students wishing to be considered for one of our music majors must first complete their audition before an admission decision can be reached. To expedite the application review process, we HIGHLY ENCOURAGE all applicants to submit their Common Application and all required materials listed on the University of Delaware Undergraduate Admissions webpage as early as possible!
Do the professors provide audition feedback?
Professors do not publicize audition results, nor do they provide feedback from a prospective student's audition.
Online Music Theory Placement Test?
The purpose of the Online Music Theory Placement Test is to help us understand a prospective student's current level of music literacy. Failing the test does NOT indicate that a student will not be successful as a Music Major, nor will it prevent an applicant from being accepted to the School of Music as a Music Major. We use this test to structure our Music Theory curriculum to better cater to the needs of the incoming students. We do not recommend cramming for this test, because it is most effective as a current measure of a student's knowledge base. We will send tests to students who have decided to attend UD after May 1st.
Where can I find graduate applicant information?
Please visit the Master of Music program page to learn more or to send an inquiry. Master of Music applicants may apply on the Graduate College website.
Who should I contact with questions?
General questions about the audition/admissions process as well as academic programs should go to our Music Admissions Inbox, musicadmissions@udel.edu. If you have questions regarding instrumental audition repertoire or wish to arrange for a trial lesson with one of the School of Music faculty, please contact the professor directly. Visit the faculty/staff directory.
I don't want to major in music, but I would like to continue playing music as a UD student.
Non-music majors interested in taking private lessons through the applied music minor, jazz studies minor, merit private study, or Honors private study programs may audition the weekend before classes begin each fall and spring semester. Participation in music Ensembles is open to all students regardless of major. Enrolled students can audition at the start of each semester. You will find a list of student ensembles here.
What happens in the event of bad weather?
When the University of Delaware is officially closed, all scheduled activities will be canceled. Visit the University of Delaware home page, or call 302-831-2000 to check on weather news. In the event of cancellation, you will receive an email, or phone call to reschedule your audition. If you need to change your audition time due to weather or travel delays from your area, please call (302) 831-2578.
What else, besides music, should I prepare for my audition?
Some music majors require additional application materials, such as an interview (music education and music composition majors), or a secondary instrument audition (pianists and guitarists wishing to major in music education). Please visit the School of Music website for details.
What if I need to change my audition day/time?
If you need to change the date you requested after completing the form, please submit a new request and contact Music Admissions, musicadmissions@udel.edu, to confirm the change. We will do our best to accommodate your request, however your flexibility is appreciated.
What music should I prepare for my audition?
Audition repertoire varies by instrument. Please visit the Audition Repertoire Requirements page for details.
