Graduate Entrance Exams

Entrance exams in history and theory are required of all admitted students before beginning graduate coursework. These exams must be taken before the student’s first semester of graduate study.

Music History Exam

The exam is offered on the Sunday before the first day of classes in the fall semester.

If the exam is passed, the student is eligible to enroll in MUSC 611 (Studies in Music History), offered in the spring semester.

If the exam is failed, the student is required to take Historical Foundations Review (MUSC 511) during the immediate fall semester. Once MUSC 511 is passed, the student is eligible to enroll in MUSC 611.

Music Theory Exam

The exam is offered on the Saturday before the first day of classes in the fall semester.

If the exam is passed, the student is required to enroll in MUSC 695 (Advanced Analytical Techniques) during the immediate fall semester.

If the exam is failed, the student is required to take Theoretical Foundations Review (MUSC 595) during the spring semester of the first year of study. Once MUSC 595 is passed, the student is required to enroll in MUSC 695 in the following fall semester.
