UD Wind Ensemble Flute Section
faculty represents a group of highly respected performers with
affiliations in major orchestras and ensembles of the Northeast,
including specialties in the area of baroque music, contemporary music,
electronic music and jazz. The woodwind area serves those pursuing a
music major in flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon, as well as
music minors, merit and honors students. Students are encouraged to
become creative and technically skilled independent musicians in their
weekly private study classes, and benefit from a close-knit community of
support from all woodwind faculty. Collaborative activities include
weekly repertoire classes and two Woodwind Solo Concerts per semester.
The woodwind area is an essential part of the University of Delaware School of Music ensembles, filling the core of the UD Wind Ensemble,
Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Opera pit orchestra and Marching Band.
The Christiana Winds,
one of the School of Music’s faculty ensembles, serves as a role
model for all woodwind chamber music activities and acts as coach and
mentor to the Graduate Woodwind Quintet program. The success of
Christiana Winds and Graduate Woodwind Quintet activities has spawned the
creation of many undergraduate woodwind quintets, creating a vibrant
chamber music scene. In addition, there is a Clarinet Ensemble and
Flute Ensemble and a baroque ensemble: Collegium Musicum, offering even
more opportunities to learn the repertoire of all ages. Woodwind
students enjoy a rich ensemble experience at UD as members of the UD
Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Fightin’ Blue Hen Marching Band, Jazz
Ensemble I and II and other chamber ensembles. The guest artist
concert series brings exciting performers to campus, offering additional
musical inspiration to music students.
