Biography
Sunmin Yoon is an ethnomusicologist, whose research focuses on the Mongolian oral traditions and music-making involved in a broad range of folk song traditions, particularly urtyn duu (long-song). Her work covers rural/urban dialogues, sensory/ecological connections to local oral performance practices, and the ideological dimension of music during the socialist and post-socialist era.
Her recent publications can be found in Journals such as MUSICultures (2019), and Asian Music (2019), and as chapters in Musical Space: Music, Performance, Power (Jenny Stanford Publishing, 2021) and Socialist and Post-Socialist Mongolia (Routledge, 2021). She is also a co-editor of a book, Mongolian Sound Worlds (U of Illinois Press, 2022). She frequently participates in regional and national conferences and currently serves as a board member for the Society for Asian Music and the Mongolia Society.
At University of Delaware, Dr. Yoon teaches world music courses such as Music of the World, Music of China, Korea and Japan, and Global Pop Unbound. She is also affiliated with the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (DLLC), teaching Korean language and culture courses.​
