Biography
Kevin J. Cope is a graduate of the University of Delaware
with master's degrees in music composition and guitar performance. He has
studied with composers Patrick Long, Jennifer Barker and Andrew Bleckner, and
guitarists Matthew Slotkin and Christiaan Taggart. He serves as the president
of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society and is also a member of the board
of directors for Philadelphia's new music ensemble Orchestra 2001.
Mr. Cope is the recipient of the Emerging Artist Fellowship for
Music Composition and the Established Professional Fellowship for Music
Composition from the Delaware Division of the Arts and was featured on the
cover of Soundboard Magazine in their 40th Anniversary Edition with a focus on
composition for the guitar. The issue also includes two movements from his
Suite No. 2 for solo guitar. He has completed commissions for a variety of
ensembles including the UD high school choral camp, middle school band camp,
guitar ensemble, graduate woodwind quintet and horn ensemble, as well as many
UD students. Commissions have also included a wide variety of other ensembles
and soloists including Delaware chamber ensemble Melomanie, the Salisbury Guitar
Festival, the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society competition, saxophone and
guitar duo Duo Montagnard, clarinetist Arianna Tieghi and guitar duo Duo
Cortado. Recording releases include the saxophone and guitar piece Origin
Unknown: A Pole Was Journeying, recorded and released by Duo Montagnard and the
solo clarinet piece Sirocco recorded and released by UD's Christopher Nichols
and Navona Records.
An experienced guitar teacher, Kevin teaches with the
University of Delaware Community Music School where he specializes in Suzuki
guitar, guitar, composition and music theory instruction.
